EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card is a special residence permit designed specifically for qualified professionals like you.

It's Germany's way of welcoming international talent with academic qualifications or comparable skills who want to work in qualified positions.

Think of it as Germany's "fast track" for skilled workers.

Empowering Your Move to Germany

These permits can be issued for up to four years and often pave the way to earlier access to a permanent residence permit - in some cases, after just 21 months.

They also allow for family reunification, so your loved ones can join you in Germany.

Switching employers on an EU Blue Card seems easy - it is possible with just one official notification! But it's crucial to understand that all legal criteria must still be met. This includes ensuring your new role complies with requirements around qualifications, salary, vacation, and overtime, and that your working conditions are on par with those of German colleagues in similar positions.

I can guide you through the process and ensure compliance, so you and your employer avoid costly mistakes.

As an immigration lawyer, I support you throughout the entire process: from choosing the right permit, preparing your application, communicating with authorities, to guiding you toward long-term settlement. With the right legal strategy, we can make your relocation smooth, secure and future-proof. If you intend to change your job, I'll be happy to provide you with guidance on how to do so and the timeframe.

Who Can Apply?

You're eligible for an EU Blue Card if you have:

A Germany university degree (or equivalent qualification) or a recognised degree

This includes degrees from universities, colleges, or other recognized higher education institutions, whether from Germany or abroad.

A job offer in Germany.

You need an employment offer for a qualified position that matches your skills and education.

A competitive salary.

Your annual gross salary must meet specific thresholds. This means you have to earn at least At least €48.300 per year (2025). For shortage occupations (jobs in high-demand fields like healthcare, engineering, IT and natural sciences) the threshold is lower.

Recent graduates may not receive the same salary and therefore need to meet a lower threshold as well.

Special Opportunities for IT Professionals

Even if you don't have a formal degree, you might still qualify for an EU Blue Card if you're an IT specialist or manager with proven professional experience. Germany recognises that tech talent comes in many forms, and practical skills can be just as valuable as formal qualifications.

What Makes the EU Blue Card Special?

Quick path to permanent residence:

After just 27 months, you can apply for permanent residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis) with basic German skills (A1 level). If you reach B1 German proficiency, you can apply even after only 21 months.

Family-friendly:

Your spouse and children can join you in Germany and your spouse can work without restrictions. Until December 2028 it is possible to even invite your parents to Germany (parental family reunion).

Job mobility:

After your first year, you can change employers freely. During the first year, you just need to inform the immigration office about any job changes.

Duration:

Your Blue Card is issued for up to 4 years, typically matching your employment contract plus 3 additional months.

What If You Don't Qualify?

Don't worry if you don't meet all the EU Blue Card requirements. Germany offers other pathways for skilled workers, including:

  • Work visas for skilled professionals with academic qualifications.

  • Special provisions for experienced professionals without formal degrees.

  • Various other work permit options.
